A fresh environmental issue survey from CNN/Opinion Research finds that a majority of Americans believe that the economy should take precedence over the environment. Water shortages and competition for water pose an increasing threat to global security according to a new report prepared by Maplecroft, a firm that specializes in corporate risk intelligence. The Water Security Risk Index described in this article evaluates the water security of 165 countries and can be used by multinational companies to identify potential risks to their operations and global supply chains.

Environmental lawyers and consultants are now grappling with how to advise clients about CERCLA liability since the U.S. Supreme Court issued its ruling in Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company, et al. v. United States in May 2009. The two-part decision addressed, among other things, whether the owners of a portion of a contaminated site could be held jointly and severally liable for the cleanup costs of the entire site.
